- Convert wall area to unit counts. Measure the wall face in square feet, then multiply by 1.125 for standard 8x8x16 block or about 6.75 for modular brick, and add 5 percent for breakage and cuts. A 40 foot by 4 foot wall is 160 square feet, which is 180 blocks, ordered as 190. Openings subtract area but add lintels and extra cutting, so never let a doorway make the estimate smaller.
- Figure mortar and sand by the units. A bag of mortar mix at about $9.60 lays roughly 28 standard blocks or 40 bricks, and jobs mixing on site add masonry sand at $46 a cubic yard. - Price reinforcement and grout for structural walls.
